Fake IDs and the Risks

It has become increasingly easy for young people to buy fake IDs online. These counterfeit documents are often advertised on various websites, social media platforms, and messaging apps, sometimes costing anywhere from £40 to several hundred pounds depending on the quality and type of ID.

Where They’re Found

Fake IDs are frequently sold on social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook. Sellers often advertise through direct messages, private groups, or stories. Some also use encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Discord to communicate with buyers and arrange sales.

Quality of Fake IDs

Many fake IDs can look surprisingly convincing, especially to untrained eyes or businesses without advanced ID verification tools. Some include holograms, UV features, and detailed printing. However, despite these improvements, these IDs are illegal and can be detected by authorities or venues with proper ID scanners.

Why This Matters for Foster Carers

• Young people may be tempted to use fake ID to access age-restricted places such as pubs, clubs, or to buy alcohol and tobacco
• Possessing or using a fake ID is illegal and can result in serious legal consequences
• It can also place the young person at risk of exploitation or involvement in unsafe situations

What Foster Carers Can Do about Fake IDs

• Have open conversations with young people about the dangers and legal risks of fake ID.
• Educate them about the potential consequences, including legal trouble and damage to their future opportunities.
• Monitor their online activity and be aware of how easily such products can be accessed, especially via social media and messaging apps.
• Encourage healthy alternatives and safe social environments.
