Helping Foster Children Settle in this Christmas

Christmas is undeniably a very happy and enjoyable time for the whole family; but this isn’t always true for foster children. When you’re a foster carer, it can be difficult to keep up your foster child’s spirits around the festive period. They can feel sad about not spending it at their parent’s homes and are sometimes overwhelmed by the changes in the household.

However, there are a number of things you can try to help them feel like part of the family and enjoy the festivities. There is sometimes such a build up and fuss, it’s very easy to forget to try and find activities that you can all do together!

Here are some of our favourite festive activities for the whole family; to ease your foster child’s worries and help them enjoy your families festivities.

Family Board Games

Doesn’t everyone just love a good old board game? They are great because they are an activity the whole family can get involved it together and bond over. You don’t have to just stick to scrabble though, there are so many new and exciting board games out there that the whole family will love. Whether you want something quick and simple or something that lasts a bit longer. You could even hold a games night and take it in turns playing your own favourite games!

Christmas Baking

Mince pies, yule logs and shortbread biccies – everyone LOVES baking Christmas treats. The best option here is definitely gingerbread houses; which is an old-fashioned activity that’s fun AND yummy! You can actually buy readymade houses that need decorating from most stores these days, which will save you one job. If you think this might be a bit extreme for you, try baking some simple gingerbread men to decorate just as fun instead.

DIY Decorations

Decorating at Christmas is definitely a highlight. Make your own tinsel, hanging decorations and Christmas tree decorations! The whole family can even have a competition of who can make the best one. There are lots of different crafts and projects you can work on together. If you are stuck for ideas, why not visit this website to get a little bit of inspiration!

We hope you’re all very excited for the Christmas festivities; but we also know that it can be really hard keeping the whole family entertained over this holiday season. So, hopefully these ideas will help a little.

From everyone here at Lorimer Fostering, we hope you have a very happy and healthy Christmas, as different as it may be this year!
