Joy’s Fostering Story – “A Lovely Time That I’ll Never Forget”
After more than a decade of opening her home and heart to young people, Joy looks back on her time as a foster carer with nothing but warmth, laughter, and pride.
Joy joined Lorimer Fostering back in 2004, caring for children and teenagers who needed somewhere safe and supportive to call home. Like many foster carers, her journey was full of challenges and incredible rewards – but what stands out most to her are the moments of connection, belonging, and happiness.
Watch Joy’s Fostering Story
In this short video, retired Lorimer foster carer Joy reflects on her 11 years of fostering – from welcoming teenagers into her home to forming lifelong bonds that still bring her joy today. Her warmth, humour, and honesty capture exactly what makes fostering so special.
Even though Joy has now retired, she remains in touch with many of the young people she cared for – some now parents themselves. For Joy, fostering wasn’t just something she did for a few years; it’s something that will always be part of her life.

A Heartfelt Thank You
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Joy for taking the time to share her story, and for continuing to be such a valued part of the Lorimer fostering community.
Even in retirement, Joy’s ongoing connection with the children she’s cared for – and with the wider fostering family – is a wonderful reminder of how powerful and lasting these relationships can be. Her kindness, humour and dedication continue to inspire us all.
Thinking About Fostering?
Joy’s fostering story is a reminder that there’s no single “type” of person who can foster. Whether you’re single, part of a couple, working, retired, or have never parented before – if you have a safe home and a caring heart, you can make a real difference.
At Lorimer, we’re here to support you every step of the way. From your first chat to ongoing training and guidance, we’ll make sure you feel confident and connected throughout your fostering journey.
If you’ve ever thought about fostering – or even just want to find out more – we’d love to hear from you.
