Safeguarding Alert: Spy Dog, Spy Pups, and Spy Cat Series
A safeguarding alert has recently been raised about the popular Spy Dog, Spy Pups, and Spy Cat book series by Andrew Cope. While these stories have long been favourites among children, some older editions now pose an unexpected online safety risk.
What’s Happened
Certain editions of these books include a web address printed in the back pages – usually under a section such as “Discover More”. This website once belonged to the author but has since been hijacked by a third party.
Unfortunately, the domain now redirects visitors to explicit adult content, including material that features children’s characters inappropriately.
It’s important to note that this website is not connected to the author, Andrew Cope, or the publisher, Puffin Books. The publisher has acted quickly to pause distribution of the affected titles and is working with relevant partners to have the website taken down.
Immediate Actions for Foster Carers
We ask all foster carers to take the following precautions:
- Check any copies. If you have copies of the Spy Dog, Spy Pups, or Spy Cat books at home, look in the back for a printed web address.
- Do not visit the link. Please avoid typing or clicking on the web address, as it currently leads to inappropriate material.
- Cover or remove the link. If you find the address, use a sticker, tape, or a marker to obscure it, reducing the chance of accidental access.
- Be alert to curiosity – Children who enjoy these stories may be tempted to explore the website. Gently remind them not to visit any links from the books.
- Report any incidents. If a child in your care has accessed the website or been exposed to its content, please report it to your supervising social worker. You can also inform Puffin Books, who are working to resolve the issue.
Publisher’s Response
Puffin Books has confirmed that:
- Sales and distribution of the affected editions have been paused.
- They are collaborating with schools and libraries to remove compromised copies from circulation.
- They are working to reclaim or deactivate the hijacked domain to prevent further harm.
Safeguarding Alert: Keeping Children Safe Online
This situation is a reminder of how quickly online content can change – even from what once seemed like a safe and trusted source. Foster carers play a vital role in helping children navigate the digital world safely.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your supervising social worker for advice and support.
Thank you for reading this safeguarding alert and your continued vigilance and care in keeping children safe!
