August Roundup at Lorimer! - Lorimer Fostering

Lorimer - At the heart of fostering

August Roundup at Lorimer!

Posted on 2nd September 2022 by

Well, where has that month gone?!?

The summer holidays are almost over, and new school years loom large. You’re probably checking off the last bits of uniform and cramming in final days out. We hope you squeeze some fun out of the last days of summer 😊

Summer days out!

Speaking of fun – this week we had our annual Family Fun Trips for our Foster Carers and Young People. Each family could choose between an outdoor adventure and picnic, or a morning bouncing high at a trampoline park. All Foster Carers, Young People and Birth Children can attend. Our days out are a great way for our Foster Carers to meet up; and to be honest, some of our team enjoy it more than the children!

Exam results

August has also been the month of exam results. Six of our Young People received results for SATs, GCSE’s, BTECs, or A Level’s. We are incredibly proud of all of them! Promoting educational achievement is key in securing positive futures for all Young People. So, as well as congratulating the Young People on their results, we would also like to say a huge THANK YOU to the Foster Carers and other professionals who have worked so hard on homework, revision and access to resources.

Brightening things up!

Our Resource Worker, Claire, has been working with some of our Young People over the summer on multiple projects. It was a wonderful surprise to come to Lorimer House one morning to find decorated pot plants on our desks! So that we can support more of our Young People, we have been seeking Sessional Support Workers – if you’re interested in this role, see the advert at LINK

August saw three team members celebrate their birthdays – Louise, Elaine and Ann. We hope you all celebrated in style 😀

Cost of Living

For the majority of people living in the UK, the cost of living has risen significantly over the last 6 months. Rising food, energy and petrol prices are contributing to tighter margins for most households.

FosterTalk completed a survey, the results of which have been published and can be found here. The scale of the response clearly shows the importance of this subject for Foster Carers across the board.

At Lorimer, we are taking notice of the findings of this survey. We have heard similar feedback from our own Foster Carers.

As a team, we have also been impacted by rising costs and share our carers concerns for what the winter months hold. Just this week, Ofgem have announced a further rise in the price cap, effective from October.

Indeed, these are worrying times for many. As an agency, we will work to support our Foster Carers and staff wherever we can. We are optimistic that circumstances will change again, and the pressure will be relieved somewhat on families across the country.

In the meantime, we want to thank those of you who remain committed to fostering despite the additional difficulties brought about by the current economic climate.
